Wheels will be painted next but what colour?

What is wrong with Desert Sand? My hybrid (SIII Stage 1 body) is Desert Sand. It has a merbau tray.
I have just aquired some sunraysia rims and I'm painting them Desert Sand.
I think Desert Sand is a nice colour most suited to a Landrover.

But I'm going to be game and suggest that you paint the cab, roof and wheels all the same colour - whether that be limestone, cream, grey or whatever. I have to agree with Roger on this. Firstly I detest black wheels on series Land Rovers, even though that is exactly what I did when I was about 16 years old on a DBG 80" and hated the shade on wheels ever since.

Xtreme is also correct in his opinion on wheels and roof. In the era of your SIIa the vehicle was either in one colour, body, roof and wheels or it had the roof and wheels of a light colour (either limestone or off-white) and the body in another. For the utes, the rear window panel was sometimes in body colour other times the same colour as the roof.

I prefer the door-tops in the same colour as the doors.

Personally for a colour scheme I like the sandstone colour of the late SIIa six, (as in Scouse's image above) with the lighter colour of the wheels (and possibly roof) which I know as limestone.

I was just trying to keep the colours relative to what was on offer at the time it was built...only reason for not going desert..(I too like that colour) was because it was put on military vehicles not civilian.

My series has a white roof and also has a safari roof on it too..which is also white.

The picture scouse has put up is exactly what I was aiming for..I take it thats not the limestone colour..???

I also have no intention of making the doors separate colours either, the tops and bottoms will be the same.

was only thinking white wheels because it has a more of a traditional look.:)

Roger..didn't all series vehicles look like they used the last in the paint tin:D

I thought it was Limestone. That's what Google gave me so it must be right ;).

oh thats good because thats what I want it to look like although my plan is to have the tray a few shades darker then the limestone. as my tray was painted purple..and not left with the metal look.

I don't particularly like the metal looking trays anyway so not really a bad thing:)

It is an interesting issue. In the UK SIII colour card the yellow was called limestone. However when we were buying new SIIa Land Rovers in Australia the yellow colour of the six was called sandstone and the white of all the roofs (including those on the DBG 88") was called limestone.

Dullbird, now that you are out of the big smoke, you will probably find that there is a local automotive paint supplier that still has the books from the 1960's - I know that Stone and Sons in Nowra has. The yellow in Scott's pic was current from 1969 to 1972.

If people can confirm actual colour codes (with pictures of the results) against current manufacturers I'll include it in a sticky thread like we have in the SIII forum.!

I have a few paint books that cover from the 50s to the 70s that I use for other cars. I'll have to check out the Land Rover listings. There's no colour chips though, just codes.

Maybe I am too late as the wheels (rims) could be already painted :o

When I took my Land Rover to the paint shop I told them to paint it with a Dirty White colour the body as well as the wheels and this came out. So the colour of the wheels are the same as the Body and if you take a look it looks like if it is a different colour.
