Thread: what size winch IIA?

There were only two types of winches fitted to the majority of Army SII/SIIA Land Rovers.

The Aeroparts capstan and the Bamford 6,000lbs PTO type.

The 109" wrecker had a tub mounted hydraulic but that was unique to the crane mechanism.

I was thinking about buying a winch for my IIA. I have an old Brano hand winch (which I used once to pull the truck out of a bog near Katherine in January - very nasty humidity), so I'm thinking electric, and maybe a warn because they have a good reputation. My questions is what size? I see them on e-bay, and they vary from 6000lbs to 9000lbs? I can't remember how much the car and No5 trailer weigh? I reckon it was about 1500kgs = 3300lbs, so if it was fully loaded for a trip, lets say add another 500kgs that would make it 2000kg = 4400lbs? I understand that pulling force and load weight are different, so can anyone tell me what size winch that converts to? Is it just a matter of a bigger winch pulling faster or will a small winch suck more power and have a shorter life? i have a duel battery system.

What do your batteries fight about? Is it anything like dueling banjos?

The thing you need to consider is the weight of the vehicle you are attempting to recover so it you need to pull out a 200 Series LC then 6000lbs is not going to be enough. The most common rating for self recovery of a 109" would be an 8,000 lbs. 6,000 lbs us usually only sufficient for smaller 4X4.

When calculating recovery loads you need to consider what and where is being recovered:

• If it is out of mud where the suction effects of the mud may add several times the weight of the vehicle to the effort required to extract the vehicle.
• or is it merely a steep incline where there is insufficient traction and only a proportion of the loaded vehicle weight will be required to recover the vehicle.
