    brake springs

    Hi

    Has any one got a picture of the springs should go on the rear brake drums for our 109.

    what ever i do the shoes keep leaning out.

    have worked out thanks to a previous post the springs should go on the inside.
    have done this with the lower sping and that helped.

    but i can not work out the top spring, after two hours and putting lots of scratchs in the shoes taking them on and off im into throwing my toys out the pram, just one picture should solve it all.

    thats great thanks.

    i tried to do top springs on inside but the springs hit the aduster's.

    im using britpart shoes and they have three holes at the top, i was using the lower hole which elongated then there is two round holes further up.

    if i use these should it be hard to put them on, seems like you need a fair bit of strentgh to pull springs apart aganst the springs.

    Yeah you'll need a lot of strength to get the springs in, I used a pinch bar when doing my County's because I'm such a brute

    shows you how the springs go.

    to get them on...

    place them over the drive hub, hook up the springs.
    place one shoe in place
    using a large lever (screwdriver if you're a hack) lever the top into the piston
    lever the bottom into the anchor

    center them up by nudging with a rubber mallet

    I usually assemble the shoes with both springs connected. (off the car)

    Then put the whole lot in place.
    Get the shoes onto the lower piston, easy because no tension yet.

    Then get one side onto the top piston and pull the other side on.

    It needs a bit of muscle but if someone as skinny as me can do it, anyone can. B-)

    It's done ten min each side now that i know how.

    did not help that hook on new springs was bit long so had to bend it slightly to get them into the holes.

    assembled off car then worked it round in a circle, put one end on piston side in first then bottom in, then did top piston side then final bottom in holding braket.

    Phew done, now need to drill out old brake drum screws, had not realised they had just been snapped off in place by previous owner, guess i should have looked, but that can wait for when i start on brakes again doing runs for pipe line, that will probably result in more questions.
