If you PM me your email address I'll send you an image of the extract from the Grenville Motors NSW Allocations Books where the data came from.

    SIIa Year Of Manufacture.

    Hi Diana,
I have a question for you to O Oracle of the Series... I am rebuilding a S2a 88" diesel with an engine S/N of 27114437F and a Body S/N of 27300480B. I'm pretty sure is is ex-military but a build year would be tops. I'm sure Winston would like to know his birthday.
    Cheers,
    Matthew.

I am assuming that the body number you are referring to is the same as the chassis number.

27300480C was fitted with diesel engine number 27135760G and sent to the dealer "Friar Bros" on 17.4.67

Engine number 27114437F was originally fitted to chassis number 27300180B and was sent to the dealer on 9.7.64. I have to consult with someone who has another copy of the books about the dealer but essentially it was a retail dealer.

Are you sure about the body serial number?

On the balance of probability, I would say your vehicle is 27300180B and you misread the "1" as a "4" and it seems that Winston wasn't military, but may have been a Government customer (although unlikely).

That sounds right to me, there is a big scratch/score through the chassis number on the bulkhead and had to guess at the '1' and guessed wrong. I was under the assumption about the colour of the block being somehow relevant to its history but that was erroneous too. That chassis number lines up nicely with the donk that is fitted too. Thanks very much, Diana.

    series 2a 109 info please?

Hi, i'm restoring a great 109 s2a but would like some info on its history please. It has obviously been very much loved over the years and is now getting a full resto.
When i got her last year she still wore Victorian rego number KHU 587 allthoug she hasnt been registered for some years now i suspect.
The vehicle is grey in colour with a limestone roof and the grey was the original colour for sure.
The vehicle number on the land rover id plate is - 25300049a
the vehicle was obviously assembled in Australia and the Aus plate says body number 49977 and serial number 109 4997.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I plan to do the car in Marine Blue and Limestone as i believe this to be correct for the period?
    Kind regards,
    Dean Bryant

Series 2a 1961-63. Check the number on the LH rear spring hanger to make sure it is the same as on the plate.

While I think blue would have been possible for that period, my memory says virtually all 109s in Australia were grey unless special orders, and all roofs on utes and all hardtops were limestone. Choice of colour came a bit later!

253 prefix indicates a 109" CKD so not built in the UK and the 49th CKD of the Series IIa era.

The Grenville Motors NSW Allocations book lists a batch of eleven vehicles 25300026a through 36a and the next batch of six vehicles commencing at 25300079a through 84a (a batch was usually in multiples of six vehicles) all sold to customers or dispatched to dealers between February and May 1962. I would therefore suggest that your vehicle was built in February 1962 and went to a state master distributor other than NSW. Possibly Regent Motors in Melbourne.

The standard colour for 109" in Australia in the early SIIa was grey body with an ivory roof. The colour I know as Limestone came in later. In Australia the exceptions to the grey/ivory colour scheme were fleet orders in fleet colour scheme (i.e. NSW Forestry in orange, & P.M.G. in red) or some truck cabs which had the truck cab matching the grey body colour.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much Diana! This helps put the puzzle together somewhat.
The roof is ivory allthough strangely when i was rubbing it back it appears it was previously a creamy colour allthough that may just be an undercoat of course.
Whilst we are doing a very complete restoration we also intend to use this vehicle for trips and so we have basically looked at all the colour schemes and picked the one we like best and hence the marine blue and limestone.
With the strength of the aussie dollare at present the imported bits are very good value and hence the list of what we get seems to grow weekly!
We are aiming to have it ready for the Mt Skene trip next year,
    cheers and thanks
    Deano
