Thread: Installing new air vent seals

My experience on the '73 S3 today

Said to son I'll just glue these on , bit of Kwik grip etc

After the initial seating of the seal with glue , getting the vent onto its hinge requires two people , one to push hard the other to carefully tap the lubed pin in.

Long story short , the Britpart ones work but you need two people , one to push and one to pull the lever. Going notch at a time it's possible to ease the seal into place against the flap. We used a plastic ruler, plastic spoon and fingers to mm by mm winkle the seal flush , overlapping the cowling slightly all around.

At the bottom I will need to inject a little more glue but I reckon I can do this with the vent shut. And it will remain shut until spring!

Went to look online for a solution, but internet was down. Don't you hate that?
It was dusk , dark (LR is outside) and cold.
I was standing on the front tyre. Not a job to tackle if your back is remotely bad...

And it's a bit of a fiddle attaching the levers underneath if you start with everything in bits!

The LHS vent has lost one of it's hinges, but that's a job for another welder and another day!

I must have been lucky with the set I got, they were Britpart but fitted with no chopping and the only challenge was putting the glue on the seals and bulkhead without it going everywhere.

Is your Landy a series and have you tried shutting the vent after glueing the seals in place? I didn't realise I had a problem until I had installed them then tried to shut the vents the following day. I had no idea it was going to be such a fiddly job. One of the previous posts said he fixed the seals to the vent rather than the bulkhead which I didn't think was an option as I had to scrape out the remnants of the old seals from the recesses in the bulkhead.
Like I said earlier, after a lot of unexpected extra work I'm happy with the end result and have thrown in a photo of the finished results.

I glued mine in then promptly shut the vents as tightly as possible. Perhaps the quality / size of the Britpart replacements is not consistent and I just got lucky. It did take me a long time removing the old rubber seals - they were well and truly stuck to the bulkhead. And yes, my Land Rover is a Series IIA.

Thanks for the reply and I have taken your advise and shut the vents up tightly so they get a better seal. Now to finish of the door seals but that's a whole nother story and blog.

Door seals are next on my list, can anyone recommend a supplier? I've heard you can fit Defender ones but this involves cutting the lip off the bulkhead - I'd rather avoid any cutting if possible.

I bought mine from Paddock - so far they haven't disintegrated but they do prevent the doors from closing easily. I think if I pack the hinges with shims it might sort the problem,

I got mine from Paddocks as well. By the metre rather than trying to work out which part no is which precut piece. Just glued it on with no more nails (clear), shut the door and left it shut for a week or so to ensure and good bond and to compress the foam.
Been on a year now with no sign of coming unstuck and the seal fits beautifully.
