    Is this bad?

    Hi All,
61 Series II LWB Ute - just starting restoration.
Climbed underneath and started cleaning 50 years of mud, dirt, grease, grime and crap off the car.
Whilst underneath I noticed this (I'm a novice here) - I think that it is the front prop shaft were it connects to the gearbox/rear prop shaft? Should this much of the spline be showing?
    HELP!
    Regards,
    Grey Ghost.

nope all good, thats the slip joint of the prop shaft, its designed to move in and out as the axle its attached to articulates on the suspension.

whip the shaft off, extend it, grease it by hand on the splines work it in and out a few times and after changing the Uj's (If required) put it back in and then put a couple of shots of grease into the nipple on the shaft.

Looks fine to me. The amount of spline showing depends on whether the axle is at the top of its travel, or whether it is at the bottom of its travel.

    Welcome to the forum

Most of the time you wouldn't see that because there is often a rubber boot over top of it.

    G'dy Folks

Yup! that shaft looks OK and the spline looks OK as Drifter stated there is usually a runner boot covering to stop ingress of dirt and mud, there will also be a stamped <arrow on both the shaft and the yoke these must line up,so that the shaft is balanced.

Drifter before you fit that driveshaft rotate one of thos hose clips 180* or the shaft will be out of balance and cause vibrations, it's in the W/shop manual

    cheers

Yup, that's why it is still on the trolley and not on the car. One of the clips is tightened up, the other is just marking time for now.

    G'day Drifter

No worries did you line up the arrows I have cured quite a few vibration problems over the years by lining up the arrows and setting the clips up 180*

    cheers

Those arrows were the first things I looked for when I was pulling them apart. I read Daves (blknight) description for replacing UJs and even marked them with white paint. One of my drive shafts appeared to have been re-welded - possibly a longer one cut down - and didn't have an arrow as such but did have a score mark in the right place - so I painted that!

That is a non standard propshaft with the slip joint from some other vehicle.
LandRover slip joints don't have full length male splines. However it will be ok if it's in good order and made to the correct length so as not to bottom out with suspension travel. ie there doesn't appear to be enough spline showing for a front propshaft unless the springs are sagged and the axle is sitting on the bump stops.
