Can anyone give me the benefit of their experience of this changeover? I want to retain & recondition the original gearbox & also retain the 4.7 ratio diffs. The back has a McNamarra mechanical locking diff and 24 spline axles & the front is stock 10 spline. I have upgraded the brakes to LWB spec with twin leading shoe, LWB master cylinder, dot 5 fluid, braided hoses. Running Disco 1 rims with 235 85 x 16 MTR tyres.
I believe that I should use Defender engine mounts and standard series gearbox mounts I to use the Discovery radiator so I inherit the electric fans, oil cooler and intercooler. The 200 TDi diesel is out of a Discovery and I get the standard turbo unit.

Welcome aboard to the forum, sounds like a nice project you have on the go there.
I agree with Blknight.aus, that you will need to detune that engine to save your gearbox, I would simply leave the turbo off.

						if it's a 200tdi disco' engine then it will fit on standard Series engine mounts bolted to the block, it's the Defender engine that requires surgery..
i use petrol engine rubbers and the square diesel rubbers on the gearbox, on the engine i also used 4x washers from the top shock mounts as spacers to lift the engine slightly (1 above and below each engine rubber)...
you may find that the crank pulley will strike the axle tube under articulation
i put mine on my lathe and turned the rear Vee off completely and a couple of mm off the front lip
you can use the original Series alternator mount on the disco block but you'll need to space it forwards 40 - 42mm to align the pulley
i used the standard exhaust manifold and turbo in my 88" and made my own downpipe, in my 109 i've used the 300tdi turbo and manifold and again made my own downpipe/exhaust

you'll find first gear to be next to useless on the road, you'll even be able to pull away in third with the standard diffs, i've 3.54 diffs in my 88" and 4.3:1 diffs in my 109 (i'd like 3.9:1 diffs if i can find them for my 109), i'd suggest either fitting a high ratio transfer box or at the very least an overdrive or your engine will rev out way too easy in any gear, i cruise on the motorway at 60-65mph with power and speed to spare

On another post Wagoo mentioned that he uses an International truck box on his, which I am tempted to use on mine if the Rover box karks it. Wagoo says that if the engine can handle changing from 1st to 3rd, then the Inter box will work.
Do you agree that 1st to 3rd is achievable with a 200tdi?

						if we are talking about first to third on a standard series box and diff ratios, then yes it's easily done..
i could probably do it with my 88" on 3.54 diffs when lightly loaded with minimal clutch slipping
i can still pull away in second in my 109 (minimal weight/load) with the 4.3 diffs
7.50 tyres on both vehicles
