What's the Background on the Winch?

Can anyone tell me the history of this winch?

I strongly doubt it's original equipment!

    Hi Geodon

This type of winch was a popular club project by the Tasmanian Four wheel Drive Club (1969 -1975).

The Diff from a Ford Prefect (4.3:1) was used to make the right angle drive but the cog arrangement for the forward drive from the power take off was tried, but dropped in favour of a chain drive (2:1), built in a oil filled case.

Very strong winch, in fact stood up to heavy use better than brand name winches of the period, If my Land Rover got hooked up on a unseen rock, the winch would break a 5/8" steel rope, without any damage to the winch.

If I could find a power take off for the Defender, (one that I didn't have to take out a second mortgage on the house to buy). I would throw that silly electric winch and make another P.T.O. winch straight away.

Geez! I'm beginning to really like this car!

    Golden Holden 186 donk.

    "Aussie Ingenuity" winch.

And it was the steed of a snake wrangler ie the guy you rang when you found a serpent in your living room. (Oh yes! I was VERY careful when I dismantled it.)

    Great history!
