    Capstan Winch Fitting

Hi All. I have just finished fitting a Capstan Winch to the front of Mary and it fouls with the steering damper? I have looked at lowering the mounting bracket where it bolts to the chassis but there isn't enough room. Has anyone else come across this problem before or is it because the damper is an option?

The reason it fouls the damper is that you have an early damper, similar to that fitted to Au military vehicles. These may have been an after market type fitted by PMC as there is no record of them in the OEM parts manuals.

You either need to remove the damper or fit the OEM type that brackets the chassis end below the chassis rail.

Otherwise you could make up a bracket to lower your current damper. Almost in the position where you can see it in your image, a bit of "C" section about 6' long that cradles the damper end bracket and drilled to bolt into the original holes in the chassis and damper bracket should do the trick.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Is it possible to rotate the fitting on the steering rod slightly or would this adversely affect the geometry?

Thanks for the replies, I have already made a drop down bracket but there didn't seem to be enough clearance to allow for suspension movement I might pop out the outer tie rod end and simulate the diff movement to see how much room it needs or if it can rotate. The link end of the damper seems to bind when its lowered that far, (difficult to explain)

If anyone has a photo of the OEM type that would be much appreciated

Had a good look at the damper and decided to remove it, there is only 1/2 inch clearance between the underside of the winch and when the damper runs out of downward travel. Thanks for the advise.
