    Series 2 Plus 35

    Hi All,

    I was driving through country Victoria today and I remembered this old Land Rover sitting in a paddock. The paddock contains a few sheds, and probably 30-40 cars scattered about all over the place. I have driven past this place for the last 2 years, and nothing much seems to have changed.

    It's a Series 2 (or 2a?) - and it has a "Plus 35" badge on the front of it - which I understand means that the diff is 35% stronger?

    I spoke to the farmers wife - to see if he was interested in selling it.

    She said "I wish he would sell any of the cars, he's getting too old to do anything with them (he's 71 now). Sorry - he won't sell any of them. We get quite a bit of interest in the cars up there on the hill, but he isn't interested in selling any of them".

    It's a familiar and sad story - some nice old cars (I would say from 1920's - 1980's), all slowing rusting away, probably never to be restored.

    Anyway - I thought that some of you might be interested...

    2A, around '66-67. It was an Australia-only improvement to, as you said, make the diffs 35% stronger, through improved metallurgy. Great to see there are still hidden gems out there to be found. It's only a pity I can't bend space and time to make travelling places a bit cheaper!!

    Series LR's don't seem to be very rare. I found about 8 within 15km of my farm, and another 6 or so a bit further away. This was without looking - I simply mentioned to a couple of people that I was interested in old LR's and they appeared. I know of several others within 30km (and a Series I in a barn just off the road that I may investigate at some point), but I have enough already. The trick is to know people who keep their eyes open!

    Many of the farmers who have LR's tend to have several that were used as spares for others and are all now abandoned somewhere. The problem is that some of those guys will interpret "do you want to sell it?" as meaning "it's worth a fortune"......... If I want it I'll offer them what I want to pay and walk away if they want more.

    Yes correct, they are out there all you have to do is look My 35 plus came from a servo, filling up and he walked across an said, I have an old one just like that at home, so it is here now Fits in well with the other series vehicles here

    Lucky bugger.

    I often wish I had a trailer with me on my trips around the countryside, I see so many landies parked up and rotting away.

    The sad thing is (for me) that even if I took a trailer, I have nowhere to keep them all!

    Yeah, same for me. Land is wasted on developers and miners. It should be reserved for people who just want to cover it with old Land Rovers. Maybe if everybody at AULRO started a fund we could buy a property where old Landies could be retired/rested/put out to stud. Kind of like a private wildlife conservancy, only for Land Rovers. We could run safaris and educational tours.... ("Look, Dad!!! It's Tickford!!!! Get a photo before it moves behind that Cuthbertson!!")
