    Question 2A wiper mod

    I just acquired a 1962 tray-back that is 95% complete after a rebuild.

Somewhere in the past, the two wiper motors were replaced with the later single unit that is located in a box on the passenger's side.

    My problem is this:
Currently the wiper rack runs above the two wheel-box assemblies and the wiper arms thus turn in the same direction.
When the wipers are in the parked position, the driver's side lies flat pointing towards the passenger side, while the passenger side arm is stopped in a near vertical position, as there is not enough space for it to lay flat.
I suspect that this may be due to the possible incorrect placement of the "new" holes where the wheel-box shaft goes through the window frame.
This problem could be solved by having the wiper arms working in opposite directions and thus park with their tips pointing towards one another.
I believe I can do this by turning the passenger side wheel-box so that the rack runs underneath that wheel-box and then reverts to running on top of the driver's wheel-box.
To do this I will have to put a two slight bends in the tube through which the rack runs.
    Can these tubes be bent?

no requirement to play with the rack boxes.

just take both wiper arms off of their drive boxes. cycle the wiper motor and observe the motion of the drive hubs and let them park. reattach the wiper arms.

when parked both wipers must be clear of the normally visable area of the windshield .

From memory on a II(a) they should already counter turn with the wipers being parked pointing towards the center line of the windshield. The tube can be curved but not bent.

I think Dave has misunderstood the situation. The wipers are supposed to work in the opposite direction to each other - "clap hands" mode.

If, as you imply, they are not doing this, the remedy is to loosen the wiper wheelbox that is parking at the wrong side, disconnect the cable (I think you can do this by removing the two nuts on the back, from memory) - probably need to loosen the other box and possibly the connection to the motor. Turn the box upside down, so that the two boxes have the cable at the top on one and the bottom on the other. Reassemble, then adjust the position of the wiper blades as Dave indicates.

The tubes can be bent, just make sure you don't kink them.

In other words, your suggestion is the way to go.

The single wiper motor may not be a replacement - this was standard from 1967, and even if yours is earlier, the firewall may have been replaced, complete with the wiper setup.

Spot on John. My copy of Haynes arrived today and it actually has a drawing showing the layout as you describe.
    Thanks again.

Well, I did the job and it worked like a charm, thank goodness.
While I was at it I lubed all the moving parts as well.
Got to love these old treasures....imagine trying to work on/modify one of them computer controlled, keep out of direct sun light, made in Quandong from 99.7% edible plastic, genuine imitation, designed in Europe to unknown international standards, family hatch.............
