Burned valves
Squirt a little oil in the each cylinder before a second test. If the compression comes up your rings are worn but if there is no change then the problem is likely a burned valve.
ok so i compression tested the engine today after it has been missing for a while now and have tried lots of other things.
cylinders 2 and 4 had about 30 psi.
the rest had about 60 psi, is there one thing that is more common than another? any help would be great!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
As Diana said, probably exhaust valves. It is just possible that you could be lucky, and adjusting the tappets could fix it, but almost certainly a valve grind and possibly a couple of new exhaust valves and perhaps seats. I would check the tappets and see if either inlet or exhaust clearance is too small on the two low compression cylinders. Worth trying before pulling the head off! But you'd have to be very lucky.
