    gearbox mainshaft distance piece

    Hi all,
    I am stripping the gearbox on my 58 SWB - it has a 1960 or 61 gearbox. Anyway I am not sure about the distance piece between 2nd & 3rd. it's brass/bronze & with a ridge/raised piece in the middle but the raised piece on mine is spinning on the round part - is this right? or should it all be one piece? looks to me like it's broken!

    Also the peg in the mainshaft for the distance piece -- how do you get it out? because the tiny pin the holds the thrust washer in place has sheered off - & the thrust washer spins -- does this matter???
    can you buy this tiny pin?

    Layshaft is also stuffed by one of the PO'ers. They had done some welding on bits where the split ring sits & stuffing with an incorrect front bearing!!!! #@#xx!!! wrong internal diameter & add some filler on the bearing seat.

    The distance piece should be one-piece; it seems fairly common that they break.

    I managed to get the broken peg out with a very sharp needle point and a strong magnet. New ones are available from Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne.

    Do a search of Wagoo's posts on this forum and the S3 forum and see what he has to say about Rover boxes and how to look after them,

    2nd/3rd gear bush

    The 2nd/3rd gear bronze bush was superceded by a 2 peice bush because they always break. I always put new pins in and use loctite retaining compound between the bush and mainhaft. This makes sure all the load is not on those tiny pins in the main shaft. Ring Sean at Roverparts in Ballarat, he is very knowlegdable with series boxes, and has top quality parts. Unlike 4x4 Motors.
    If there is some of the pin sticking out of the shaft, pull it out with vice grips, or if broken get them drilled out at a local machining shop. The pins are only a few $'s each. Always make sure your clearances are spot on with this bush as they tend to seize if to tight.

    It also sounds like it has the later bell housing with larger layshaft bearing!

    they are suppose to be on epiece but i heard they are designed to break

    Well you are close - it has a later layshaft for the larger bearing but only the small bearing & bell housing - that why it's been stuffed with.
    Anyway, I now have a new correct layshaft & small bearings.

    Can't get the pin out with my vice grips so will be off to the machine shop tomorrow.

    well the distance piece I got doesn't fit - the flange is thicker than the old one. 3.3mm to 6mm

    the thin flange is only meant to be till 1953 but my gearbox number is 1519***** - but I guess that is only the top cover. I am not sure what is going to fit anymore.

    just not sure which way to go - any suggestions? if I buy the thin one something else won't fit !!!!***
