Thread: Fitting a S2 wire steering wheel to a S2A

1. By itself, no - the attachment is totally different. The wire one has a clamp bolt, the later one has a nut on the end of the shaft, and the spline is different.

It is a straight swap between the steering box + wheel + column, however.

2. The wire wheel continued into Series 2a, and was also used on Series 1, while the later wheel continued to the end of Series 3, so neither type of wheel is specific to any Series.

shows an exploded veiw of the two coloums and steering wheels and one steering box
so...
do they share the same steering box ?
are there any down sides to fitting an older assembly?

the reason for my question
i like the older wire steering wheel
the steering box and relay in my s2a is in need of some remedial works , massage and prolly aroma therapy ....possibly a bit conselling
if i was to gitta complete .. say an early series2 steering colum and wire wheel
it should be an easy fit it to my existing re birthed , folate scrubbed and tibbetin yak fat packed steering box ?
am i assuming right or do i have to gitta steering box with the steering colum etc

Hi Coopers

The housing and some components are the same however the steering wheel and the inner column have to be fitted to their mating parts. This also includes the drum for the horn button contact/turn indicator cancelling wheel and at least the top bearing on the shaft.

For the wire spoke wheel you need the part number 518676 column. This is shown as "6" on the drawing in my parts manual 1972.

Given that the box is recirculating ball, you can sometimes get good results using oversized balls in the worn main nut/shaft. The originals were 3/8"

Not what you are asking, but I should point out that the late Series 3 wheel, while identical in appearance to the earlier (non-wire spoke) wheel, and completely interchangeable, is much more durable in that it does not have a hard surface that eventually wears through, and the surface is much more resistant to wear and deterioration.

i dont know...i jus like the 3x two rusty/shiney wire rods and wore bakealite rim

was ther a prominent component on the ole landy that is chromed?

Series 1, 2, early 2a parking light surrounds, optional Series 2/2a turn indicator lever, some optional rear view mirrors. That is about it. Most parts that you would expect to be chromed on other vehicles were galvanised on Series Landrovers. There were perhaps a few extra chromed bits on some special purpose bodies such as royal review Landrovers and especially the Tickford station wagons.

Mister coopers, they say with persistence, determination & a little lube, it is possible to stretch a mosquitos ass across the rim of a bucket. However there is sometimes a simpler solution.
Can i suggest the oxy torch followed by the welder....... just cut the existing steering column off, & weld the correct one on. (complete with quirky shiny steering wheel) and bam - there you have it. I would think 1 hr should be enough time including clean up & fire extinguishment, & then you will have time to have an extra coopers to celebrate whilst sitting and admiring your new steering wheel.
