    2.6 L engine

Just picked up a 2.6 L engine from a wrecked series 3, hoping it will be suitable for parts for my 2a Dormobile, which has its original 345 engine.

The new engine's number is 94100464A, inlet manifold has BA77320 and 564203 and numbers 0, 4 and 71 as raised castings.

It has an SU carb, 6 blade fan, coil mounted vertically on rear left, and a large flame trap from the engine breather that does not look like it connects to the carb.

Can anyone tell me more aout this engine, from these details, and what parts might be transferrable to my current engine, if needed?

    Thanks

    Roger

The engine number is correct for a Series 3 2.6 factory engine.

So any series 3 manual that references that engine will have all the details you need.

I have the series 3 manuals in PDF, send me a PM and I'll try and email the relevant sections.

    Thanks jakeslouw

I already have a copy of the S3 manual so won't need to take up your kind offer.

What I really want to know is were there any significant changes to the 2.6 engine between the end of S2a and beginning of S3?

My engines both have heads with casting dates in the same month of 1971, but one block has a S2a number and the other has a S3 number.

I suppose the real question is did the blocks change at all?

The main differences are between the SU carbs and the CDI Stromberg +/- the adjustable main jet.

The only Land Rover 2.6 that have major differences are the ones out of the forward controls that have smaller main bearings and a different water pump.

Some of the SIII 2.6 also had an air pump fitted into the exhaust manifold to dilute the concentration of pollutants to pass ADR27a (if present throw the pump away). You can swap over your externals if you want the standard appearence.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Thanks Diana

The odd thing with these ones is the S3 has the SU carb, the S2a has the Stromberg. My reading suggests the Stromberg replaced the SU earlier in 2a production. I suppose the SU on the later engine might not be original.

If these are the only differences, though, I am pretty happy to have 2 complete engines in running condition that seem to have been built around the same time - either side of the 2a/3 model change.

I know that the SIIB six cylinder had the SU right through until production ceased in South Africa around 1974/75. This was at the same time as the SIII was using the Stromberg.

Are there any external features or numbers that could tell me if I have a 2b engine?

    • Engine number 300 or 330 prefix,
    • small water-pump without the adapter plate of the bonneted control Land Rovers (same water pump as 3 litre P5 Rover car engine),
    • an exhaust manifold that has an exhaust pipe flange that points to the rear.
