    Question Series2 v 2A

Thi was posted in "Projects" but i yhought here might be better. I have just purchased a short wheel base Land rover series 2A 1972 the last of the british land rovers (not leyland) this is a Australia delivery with only 2 owners next to me , the land rover is going but needs a new battery, new carb kit and seats.
The land rover is a del to Australia in 1972 and has not been changed in any way, just requires a little restoration and some TLC, the landy has no rust.
The land rover has orignal engine and all fittings, their are some panel dings but not damaged to bad and the seats need replacing.
I'm looking at either doing a full resto on the vehicle, or using it as a hunting platform, I like the idea of the restoration though. It seems that parts are easily found and reasonably cheap. I'm also lucky enough to have a buddy who owns a smash repair business and has offered to help in the panel work and paint areas, anyway I'm sure when i get to needing some advice with the project, there will be someone here who can help. I will take some before photo's and show the progression of the work. Heron lies my question, are many of the parts of a series 2-2Aand3 interchangeable. I am a Landy virgin
    cheers

There was continuous development from the introduction of the Series 2 in 1958 until the end of Series production. Almost everything is interchangeable at least at the assembly level, and many of the small bits were identical.

Some significant changes however. Series 2a to 3; door hinges, bulkhead, windscreen, dash, alternator instead of generator.
Late Series 3 - tie rod ends not interchangeable with series 1/2/2a/early 3. Swb went to 24 spline drive flanges. All models to Six cylinder front brakes.
Through production from Series 2, gradual change from British to Unified threads, incomplete at end of Series 3 production. Start of metric threads late Series 3.

Also, note significant differences with the six and V8 compared to the four.

Get a parts book for Series 2/2a/3 - see Rave CD in Shop on the top header bar.

The IIA makes a great hunting vehicle especially if you take the door tops off and put gun rests on either door (like the big iron door rests) but its not as great as you may think folding the windsreen down because you can't go over 40km/h without the roof flapping around dangerously. A set of spotlights on the roof or roo bar are another good addition and a good set of side rails to avoid damage when in the bush and a gun rack across the back window is good for carrying more than one gun.

As stated above, most parts are identical or similar. There were some changes that can make things a little difficult, like the three different wiper motors and the bulkhead mods to fit them, the position and operation of three different hand-throttles (S2-2A-3), and the four different bulkheads and floor layouts (four and six-cylinder models from 66/67 on. You may come across a slight difference in the 2/2a mudguard lights layout (pre-69) which I've come to believe is about where the Landy was made (home-market or export/CKD).

Largely though, virtually everything can be made to fit with enough ingenuity and elbow-grease!
