Are you sure they are air? Its more common to be nitrogen.
Is the air acting as a spring, or to pressurise the damping oil within the shock?

If its pressurising the oil its definitely nitrogen.

I had a set of pump up shocks on my P76, they were great, if you had a large load it was just easy to inflate the shocks to bring the car back up to level which kept the steering angles correct and stopped the car dragging its bum on the ground.
If there is a downside, it is that the shock mounts are not designed to be load carrying elements.
It is a similar system to fitting air bags inside the coils of coil sprung vehicles.

Monroe airshoicks wow that takes me back! I think any1 who had a car when we were young fitted them! They were great to give that bum up nose down look on your holden/falcon so beloved by revheads then . OH and they were good when we hooked the skiboat up too . Have not seen them for years now When connecting them up run an airline for each shock same as for the incoil airbags, for the same reason they will transfer from load side, eg when cornering which is disconcerting! Hang on! got carried away there we are talking LANDIES I doubt you are going to corner at 75-80 mph like we did in the falcons and toranas!!
They did wear out and leak though, mainly where the airbag was clamped onto the schock body.
