That's putting it mildly!![]()
Came across this rear x-member repair job on a chassis I am stripping down. I guess one way to describe whoever the PO was who welded together this collection of bits and pieces is 'creative'!![]()

You gotta do what you gotta do
Belongs in the ghetto fab/hack thread on Pirate hahaha
Looks like a farm repair...
Yeah, I'm guessing a farm repair. And I don't mean to sound overly critical. Who knows what the bloke's circumstances were when he found he needed to fix the chassis all those years ago? I had noticed this when I bought the sad old LR, so it was no surprise; just adds to the fun of restoration as far as I'm concerned. As soon as I can source a cross-member, Oliver need no longer be embarrassed to show his rear end in public.![]()
I picked up my replacement rear cross member from LRDirect, with a heap of other parts including a front dumb iron, bulkhead repair sections and some brake and wheel bearing kits. All up it came to about A$300 in postage. The exchange rate isn't quite as healthy as when I purchased those though, so your mileage may vary. LRDirect also quotes shipping as you add items to your cart, so you end up with a solid idea of costs. I expect the cross member would have been about half the cost of my total shipping bill, give or take a bit.

thanks very much for that pfeeney and Martin. Yes, I looked at prices from the UK, including shipping, and ended up with a lovely specimen from Jim at land rovers.com.au in Victoria.
(Moderator: not sure if I'm allowed to mention vendors and prices here, so I won't mention the price)
btw, Martin, my boy wants to know of your Landy is named Serenity in honour of a spaceship? If so, you'll know what I am referring to. If not, just let it pass.
Garry
Yep, Serenity is indeed named after a Firefly class transporter. Best ship in the 'verse. My series 1 is also named Kaylee.
The name is also partly in reference to The Castle - "How's the serenity?"
A couple of people have picked the Firefly reference up now.
