Hi Folks, Have just purchased a Series11 `58 Landrover. Serial no. 143800582. When filling up at garage, when tank full, fuel overflows onto ground. There appears to be a hole on the top of tank near filler tube. Is there something missing there?
On another topic, the mushroom type breather on top of motor (2L.) held on with a nut, I gather this is the engine oil filler point?

The fuel tank has these holes in the top of it.
1. Filler pipe
2. Breather. This is about 4cm from the filler pipe, and has (should have) a hose to the breather fitting below the filler fitting on the body.
3. Fuel outlet. This has a drop pipe into the tank, held by two screws, gasket under it.
4. Fuel gauge sender. Sender is attached by about six screws, gasket under it.
5. Dipstick. Military tanks have a fuel dipstick with a raised fitting soldered to the top of the tank
All of these could leak, perhaps the most likely is the breather hose is missing, dislodged or split. Other possibility is the filler hose loose or damaged.

If it is a 143 prefix it is 1959 model. If it says 1958 on a plate on the bulkhead, then it is probably ex-army Command Reconnaissance.Originally Posted by gelveigh

Charlie, have no idea about plate on bulkhead, though I gather that it has never been registered in Aus. according to VicRoads. It did though once have the lettering on roof. (NL 6). Does this mean anything to you?

No it doesn't.
The Command Reconnaissance was basically a civilian car with a few army bolt-on attachments - I thought you might have one, because on mine it said Contract No. blah blah 1958, but I found out later that it was a '59 like yours.
Post some pictures of the dashboard etc. and we military connoisseurs might spot something army.
If it is ex-army, it might explain why it was unregistered - straight from the auction to a station, for example,

Oil filler clarified, petrol smell and overflow appears to have come from the disconnected breather hose behind the front fold down seat back. Will post some pics. soon of `Fat Albert`, till the next of my dumb questions, if you can`t be good, be careful.

Ah ha! Tac sign holders on the tail-gate and the horn button are Army bits!
It appears that your very nice Rover, is one of the first recruits into the Australian Army - congratulations!
Other things to look for are an aluminium plate riveted to the floor behind the centre seat in the tray; and a blackout light - or at the least a bracket for it - under the tray and pointing towards the rear axle.
Are you sure the chassis no is 1438... not 1439...?
Have a look here AB 1282606 MWSO for your chassis no. I thought I found it earlier but I probably misread it.
Anyway until the chassis no. is confirmed, it remains to be seen if it is ex-army or a bitza,
