    Tyres for a Series IIA

    Hi everybody


    I'm looking for advice on tyres for my Series IIA (aka Betty).


    She is currently running 6.50 x 16s what look like road tyres (see picture). I'm looking to replace these with a semi off road radial tyre (after I get the wheels sand blasted and powder coated). I don't want a super aggressive off road tyre as in reality I won't be doing serious off road driving in her - but I want her to look the part.


    I'm told the equivalent radial tyre is a 205 x 16R.


    Any suggestions? I thought I read on this forum a few months ago of a tyre dealer in Cooma who is a good source of appropriate tyres but of course now I can't find that thread. I live only a 100kms from Cooma.

    The guy in Cooma who had the tyres was Micks Tyres and Auto. He is on the corner at the roundabout where you turn left to head towards the coast and Bombala (if coming from Canberra). He sometimes pops up on e-bay as well.
    I thought the original size was a 7.50 x 16, with the radial equivalent being the 235/55R16. The 235/55R16 is the standard Defender tyre size so there are a wealth of tread patterns to choose from in this size.

    My owners manual only lists 6.50x16, 7.00x16 and 7.50x16

    No mention of 6.00x16 at all

    Weren't 6.00x16 used on Series 1?

    I'm running 7.50x16 on my 88". They are so low geared that unless you really want the original look the bigger tyre is nicer to run, plus 7.50x16 is a common enough size to get, as its still used on base level Landcruisers and Defenders.

    meant 7.50 X 16" on the 109" - 7.00 X 16" were not common although they are fitted to mine.

    I think 235/85R16 is closer to 7.50 x 16.

    S2a parts book lists 6.00, 6.50, 7.00, 7.50 x16, 8.20, 8.90, 9.00x15, and 9.00x16 (One Ton only)

    Thanks for the responses. I hope to have Betty road registered later this week and once the wallet shock of mechanic charges, blue slip and registration charges and CTP and comprehensive insurance is forgotten I'll go looking for better tyres.
