It is generally rear main bearing oil seal, and in some minor instances, it can be gear oil that has escaped from the clutch throw-out assembly, but generally rear main seal, a quick sniff of the oil will tell you what it is, cheers Dennis

Motor needs to come out.... or does it? There are additives readily available now from stupidcheap and the likes that "fix" these problems. Even head gasket problems! Mate, give them a shot, worth the few bucks they cost even if you only buy yourself some time? Forum thoughts on such products?????

As Dinty says - you can tell whether it is engine or gearbox oil by the smell - but it is most likely engine oil, which means rear crankshaft seal.

You can replace it without removing the engine - however, the alternative is to remove the gearbox. The flywheel has to come off. But it is likely that you can move the gearbox back far enough, rather than actually removing it. (I know you can move it far enough to replace the clutch)


So it is probably up to you which is the easy way to attack it. On the other hand, if it is only a slight leak, it may not be worth dealing with - put in the wading plug but remember to drain it every service. And Snowbound's suggestion may help. Also, giving the engine a bit of use may also help.

what's wrong with a drip now and then?
don't panic about it and drive it, check the oil levels and see how bad it is.


I suggest that you pull the dipstick and check the colour of the oil drip with the colour of the oil on the dipstick.
gearbox oil will definitely smell like gearbox oil, engine oils do not have that strong smell.
so if you cannot smell test the oil, the colour might help unless you have a new engine with golden oil.


it is amazing how much mess a small drip can make, checking the level and driving it for a while will give you some sort of oil wastage and from that you should be able to see if you need to pull anything.


and if it is gearbox oil, check the level, if it is overfull, it may be above the input shaft and will always leak.

Still need to get her over the pits, and the local inspection centre basically said they know they leak but If there guy walks under the car and gets a face full of oil they sort of have to knock it back 😃

Just put the wading plug in for the inspection unless it is leaking so badly that it will get on the clutch by the time you get home.

we have decided to remove the gear box as it is the easiest to get to with the body off. At the same time i will give the gearbox a bath and also address some of the other leaks like the transfer box sump plate having oil drip out of the threads on the studs.

went through our gasket/seal draws in the garage and found something that looks suspiciously like a rear main and the 'T' cork gaskets.......makes me think we were planning on putting them in but obviously forgot to

i will post pics in my thread on the members ride section detailing step by step.
