    New project - Series 2A

Hello, I've just bought a 2A as a project for my son and I to tackle. It's complete and original, with very few modifications. Putts around reasonably well, but we will progressively work on bringing it back to its former glory.

    Immediate tasks are:

Wheels and tyres - need to locate 5x original steel rims and find out where to buy the original style tyres

Carburettor and air cleaner - it has been fitted with a Stromberg from a Holden. Original air cleaner is still intact, so I need to source a Solex carbi, and the intake pipes that go from the carbi to the air cleaner.

Windscreen wipers - it's missing the near side wiper motor, so we shall need to find one of those.

Brake master cylinder - the steel canister is very rusty, so prior to a brake overhaul I thought it best to get all the parts together. It is a CB type master cylinder, from what I can gather. What are the options for a fluid reservoir. Are the steel ones still available?

Any pointers/advice on the above would be appreciated. We are located in Sydney.

    Thanks,

    Ed Snr & Jnr

Looks in pretty good condition and pretty straight.Solex carps are hard to find in good condition, you better finding one and put a kit through it.There pretty simple
    too work on.
Passenger side wiper wasn't standard and should have a plate covering the hole when it was new if it didn't have a wiper motor fitted. As for parts try land vehicle spares in Silverdale.

Before getting wheels and tyres you need to decide whether to get the standard five inch wide wheels standard on the swb, or the 5.5" standard on the lwb, optional on the swb. And make sure you get a matching set.

The original 6.00 or 6.50x16 tyres that would have been fitted are hard to find today, going for the 7.50 which need the wider rim will make the choice easier. But the larger tyres will put your speedo out (unless it is already fitted with a lwb speedo).

Avoid late Series 3 wheels, which have a circular raised ridge joining the mounting holes, as these will probably mean getting longer wheel studs.

I agree that your best option for carburettor is to find a Solex and overhaul it.

The missing LH wiper motor may never have been fitted - although unless the vehicle has been continuously registered it is hard to see how it is registered - I had to fit the LH wiper motor to my 2a when I moved from the NT to NSW in 1966!

Parts try Land Vehicle Spares as suggested or possibly All Four X 4 in Newcastle, or use a "wanted" ad on this forum. Or ask around locally for things such as the wheels, aircleaner hose and elbow, and carbie.

I suggest it would be a good idea to get the CD covering Series Landrovers from the forum shop. Both the workshop manual and parts book are valuable - the parts book as much because it has a much better supply of pictures than the manual as for ordering parts.

    Thank you for the advice.

I've found a number of suppliers overseas that appear to have a vast inventory of new old stock and reproduction parts, such as Dare Brittania, Paddock Spares etc.

Are there local suppliers that have similar stock lines?

    Regards, Ed

Yes, see the verandah and the recommended suppliers forum. The local people will have much the same lines, albeit a little smaller inventory, but with the advantage that they are more likely to be familiar with Australian differences. Prices may be higher or lower, and at least sometimes delivery is quicker.

    Welcome Fast Eddie.
You will have to get a new tag name driving the 2a !!
    Great looking vehicle though.
Personally I would leave the rims as is. It gives you many more options as far as tubed or tubeless, tyre sizes etc goes.
Overseas suppliers are ok if you know exactly what you need. Postage is expensive. Expect to pay the equivalent of the cost of the part for the postage with a minimum of about $50 I have found. Ebay is also your friend. Just check that the seller will send to Oz before you bid for overseas sellers though, and check the postage before bidding!

Lots of local suppliers for both new and second hand.
Google Land Rover Spares and give them all a ring. Thats what I did.
Roverparts, All four x 4, TR to name a few for new, Land Vehicle Spares in Silverdale, Hilton Pollard in Colo and the HoHars on here. Plenty of options.
    Enjoy !!
