    Hand brake not holding

    I am restoring a S2a

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-ii-...storation.html

One the problems with the wagon is that the transmission hand brake will not hold. The button on top of the hand brake lever is seized and cannot be depressed. The lever can be pulled up but just falls back down when pressure is released. there is no ratchet feel or noise. Any ideas?

The button on the hand brake lever is connected to a rod that runs through the lever, then operates a pawl on a curved ratchet to lock it - the pawl drags up the ratchet giving you the clicking sound.

The pawl is held against the ratchet by a spring and pushing the button down pulls it away from the ratchet so it can be released. My guess would be the spring is gone or the button is in fact just seized in the end of the lever.

    Try turning the "button" clockwise.
Sometimes they unscrew and take the tension off the ratchet.
