series 11a ans series 111 compatability

I have a 1967 11A tray back with a very shaby body but mechanics are very good. I also have a 1972 111 utility which has a very good rear and hard top,but no eng,g'box or electricals. If i took the tray and truck cab of the 11A would the landrover rear from the 111 fit in its place. They are both 109in the 11A is 4 cyl and the 111 was a 6 cyl. Also would the front guards also be interchangable. Your comments would be welcomed.

Welcome aboard.
The answer to all your questions is YES.

Thanks Landy Andy I now have a job for the weekend, do you know if the diffs from the 6 cyl are different to the 4cyl as i also have an ex army 111 of about 1978 vintage which has high lift springs and white painted diffs which also has fw hubs that i would like to use one day

THe army seris 3 vehicles had a sailsbury diff in the back which is stronger than the regular diff, but the front will be the same, however they will be the stronger 24 spline type, not the 10 spline as in the series 2 and 2a

Phoenix is right in pointing out the Ser3 have the rear Sailsbury diff wich is much stronger,its a Dana diff.
And yes the Ser 3 front diffs have stronger 24 spline axles,all interchangeable onto earlier models if you have the time/motorvation 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

G'day Boomer, yes you can fit the Salisbury diff but you will either need to have the S3 109 tailshaft or you need to shorten the the other tailshaft because of the extra size of the Salisbury diff i.e. it's closer to the back of the T/case cheers Dennis

The front and Rear diffs are interchangable as complete units between 2a & 3's if using the salisbury rear diff you need to use the rear tailshaft, the ratios are the same for all diffs, Series2,2a,and early Series 3's had 10 spline axles the later 3's had 24 spline axles (stronger splines) the gearboxes on 4cylinder vehicles are interchangeable, the six cylinder bellhousing differs, bolt holes differ, block to bellhousing, the bellhousings between the 4 and 6 are swappable, all other parts, clutch,brakes,steering,springs are also swappable.

In my mind, the Salisbury is a fiddle fit to anything but another 109 of that type since the mounting system is different. The spings to which the Salisbury mount are outside the chassis rails on own brackets, whereas the Rover diff mounts to the spring under the chassis rails. So it's a case of modify to fit either way for what little gain.

With most heavy loads attempted in 4WD the difference between Salisbury and Rover diff are negligible. In the past I have started in low range (hubs locked), then after getting the load rolling (up to 4th gear low range) double clutch the change through the transfer back to 2WD makes life easier on the clutch and gearbox even with Rover diffs.

Since the idea is to swap body panels, wouldn't think it makes much difference, however the series two with series three guards (the four headlight conversions you see about the place) does not cut the look.
