Which thermostat?

Vehicle - 1969 SWB 88 Ser IIa petrol - has consistently run "cold", at least on the gauge. I have ordered a "groovy" laser temperature sensor from fleabay to check various engine and radiator temps after running for some time. I need the vehicle on the road so I don't want to pull the thermostat until I have the correct replacement and gasket; assuming there is a thermostat in the vehicle!

I will do the voltage stabiliser test tomorrow to check it's not the gauge that's the problem.

When I examine the parts book it tells me the thermostat part no is 504736 but doesn't describe a temperature type, i.e. 74C or 82C. But Roversnorth and roverpartsplus give different numbers and different types. Lrdirect says the part number may be obsolete; they don't have it in stock in any event.

Can anyone tell me which thermostat I should use? The chassis is 24316177G, engine 24103556A. The thermostat cover type is the straight up vertical outlet with three bolts and may or may not have an o-ring, depending on whether you read the parts manual or workshop manual.

I have a s2a shorty and it never runs hot, although only God knows how accurate the gauge is (very naughty of me, as I do have all the gear to test it)
Even now when the temp is rather cold here, I am driving it with a blind over the grille to get it a bit warmer, and that is working fine as the heater this morning actually began demisting the windscreen. The previous owner use'to take the fan off for winter! Mine runs green coolant and I do not know if it has a thermostat.

does your fuel gauge work mate? If so it wont be the voltage stabiliser. I'm just about to take a look at the thermostat and temp sender on my series 3 109 - I have nothing registering on the temp at all. I thought the 82c job was for the 6 cylinder - but I'm no expert.

Yes I saw that on one of the UK LR forums as a quick check of the stabiliser and I think it does. I'm going to fill the tank right up tomorrow and actually "notice" what the gauge does.

Tridon list it as 82C, part number TT1-180, you should be able to get one at Supercheap/Repco/Autobarn etc. If you are an RACV member you get a discount at Repco.
Gasket is listed as TTG20U. http://www.tridon.com.au/partFinder/
A couple of years ago I got a thermostat & the correct gasket from Supercheap for my Series I.

There are still some parts you can get over the counter without having to go to a Land Rover specialist.......

Never runs hot? It's a wonder, I've tried to follow you Harry

. you have a heater?, Your getting soft mate. I've been driving Ralph to work this week, but the fan motor has smoked itself, it's been a bit cool first thing in the morning

oh well - no thermostat in mine at all!

Couldn't get the drain screw out so need to remove the radiator so I can get at it with plenty of grunt. Needs a bloody good clean out.

In the ser 3 I had to make the tridon thermostat fit. [actually an XF ford thermostat].

the thermostat fits into a recess but the thermostat outlet housing is also the same dia. I had to quickly make up a spacer to hold the thermostat up against the sealing oring. I guessing an after market housing is available to remedy this issue. I chose to keep the original housing and not use an alloy replacement.

I wasn't able to buy an 82 land rover thermostat locally. the 74 deg wasn't up to operating the heater. after 20 km drive the gauge was still in the cold.
with the 82 the gauge reads half but the radiator is warm only. to hold.

I decided to go with the 82C on grommit's recommendation supported by a couple of other sources and will be fitting today if the weather holds. I ended up getting one from Roverparts as it was a skirted type very similar in appearance to that in the shop manual. I figure the skirt has to effect flow dynamics and is therefore there for a purpose. The Tridon didn't have the skirt. I am still wondering whether the "always cold" engine is simply a function of the coolant which strikes me as closer to pure mix than a diluted form.

Anyway I also picked up some Castrol Radicool and will do a flush at the same time. We'll see what happens.
