Thread: Speedo drive cable

Looks like the cable has broken off that small round disc bolted to the gearbox. Standard 2a cable with screw on fitting for the speedo head is needed. Dont lose the two bolts that are left and try find another one. New cable is secured to gbox with those 3 screws. Cable has the plate as part of itself. Job done.

As Rod says. You need a Series 1/2/2a speedo cable. It is fastened to the transfer case by that round plate, which comes as part of the cable. It is fastened by three screws, 4BA, I think from memory.

The screws are 2BA and there are 3 of them, cheers Dennis

Does anyone know where I can source the little coloured lenses that sit on the dial plate from - one is missing

It may be inside the speedo - I think they go in from behind. But if not, a likely source might be in the wanted sections of this forum, there are probably plenty of dead speedos with these still intact about.

a year later and I have the speedo working - she worked on a new cable, but was about as reliable as...

had the speedo serviced, and she is now as good as gold.

we have cracked 50 in her. pic was taken at Carrieton SA a few weeks ago

That photo shows you hitting the fabled 17mph barrier.

A couple of points on this thread -

1. Speedo cable is different between the six and the four, as the gearbox is further back on the six

2. I don't think that Series Landrovers were ever fitted with speedos with chromed bezels, although some may have had them to special order, or it may have been some owner's 'bling', as similar speedos with chrome bezels were common in English cars in the 1950s, 60s and even 70s.
