Have a lead on another Series 2A SWB.
Late 60s (but pre-wing headlights), 2.25L Petrol, good overall condition, was rego'd and driven up until 2012 but hasn't been on the road since (owner passed away).
What would be a reasonable offer to make?

Value will depend critically on things not visible in the picture - chassis and firewall rust in particular, unwise modifications, and general condition (this looks good from the pictures).
But, assuming that there are no significant problems in these areas, Start at about $5,000, perhaps a little higher and subtract from this costs you know are going to be needed.
Almost certainly,
registration, assuming it is unregistered, $hundreds
Battery
Probably some tyres,
What are the brakes like? Could be $$ here, cylinders, drums, shoes.
Fixing the oil leaks for a blue slip. Expect handbrake o/haul with this.
Potentially,
Engine overhaul? Check compression
Clutch? Probably OK, but needs checking, hydraulics probably need work
Gearbox? Drive needed to tell.
Steering - swivels, tie rod ends, relay, box.
The end figure?
If everything is as good as could be hoped for, perhaps $4,500, most likely, $3,000, quite possibly $1,500. Really needs to be looked at by someone who can spot these potential problems.

And that's just the problem, it and I are in different states and I don't want to travel all that way to find that it's not as described.
Sounds like we're on the same page rangieman, I was thinking $2-3k to take a punt and buy it sight unseen.

		Thanks JDNSW,
Understand that it can be a bit of a minefield I hoping the fact that it was registered until recently and not a paddock basher is a good sign but not willing to put a lot of money down without knowing for sure.
Any mechanically minded forum members from the apple isle who are perfectly happy with their current Landy and not in the market for another?😉
As I listed, there are a bunch of unknowns - perhaps you could ask if there is anyone on here who could have a look at it for you (and be trusted not to pre-empt your purchase). You could ask them to report on the specific issues I noted, not attempt to value it.
And as a bottom line - there are not many of these appear on the market, and not many seriously looking for one at any one time. If nobody is seriously looking for one, and the seller has to sell - it will go quite cheaply, regardless of what its actual "value" may be, and similarly, if two determined buyers want the same vehicle, then the price can rise dramatically, again, regardless of the value.

You've had some good advice, so I'm going to throw in a possible option.
First, talk to the bloke and see what sort of money he wants. The approach would be along the lines of 'these are the things that could be wrong and this is what I'd have to spend to fix them so I'm only going to offer such and such'. Be cheeky.
If he gets back and answers all your worries, positively and negatively and makes a counter offer, you're ahead of the game.
Once you settle on a suitable figure, all the while making it clear that you need to have the vehicle checked out and your offer may go down as a result of that check, then you can organise an inspection - yourself, a forumite or, if appropriate, maybe the state's motoring body.
The important thing to remember is that everything is fixable... but sometimes it hurts in the pocket.
I'd also look at what'll be required to register the thing. In my state, it needed an inspection but that was just to make sure lights went blink and the numbers all matched the paperwork. If the transfer to your state is relatively straight forward, ask HIM to register the thing, thereby putting the responsibility for getting it roadworthy on him.
Of course, waiting for something closer to home also works
I would be saying 3-4k. It looks to be quite good

SubscriberI have just watched two Series 3 SWB Landies sell on Ebay. Both sold for over 8K, neither was registered and neither looked any better than what you pictured. Either of them may have had any of the problems John mentioned back at #3.
Is a Series 3 worth more than a Series 2? It would appear so but I am thinking it should be the other way around. What say you blokes? John in #7 says it again, it depends on who is looking. Its funny, this Landie game, I would have let mine go quite cheaply when it was in the shed at my mates place, just to get rid of it. Now it is taking pride of place in the carport, close to all fixed up and roadworthy, I wouldn't sell it for 20K.
