    Front crank seal question

Hi All ... I am in the process of replacing the front crank seal and have noticed that there is an additional metal insert in the casing that had the original seal pushed into it .. I have looked in the Series 2 parts manual as well as a few forums explaining how to install the front seal, but non of them mention the additional insert.

The new seal will fix perfectly in the casing without the metal insert, and will obviously not fit if the metal insert is installed .

Please have a look at my attached photo, you can see the metal insert "collar"

    Thanks

I could be wrong, but I've come across seals where that 'insert' is the outer of the seal, and don't seem to fit, but on closer inspection of the casing the 'insert' for the old seal is still in place.

Its been a good few years since I last replaced the crankseal so I could be wrong.

Hang on I've just re-read this - Now I think the 'insert' is part of the old seal and is redundant and the new seal just fits in without it

    Cheers

That's what I thought as there is no part number for the metal insert anywhere and the exploded diagrams do not show it ... It's a strange one

It is just the outer metal casing of the old seal that has become separated on removal. Happens a bit with seals that are very old, the bonding fails with age.

depends on how much you need, what application you want to use it in.

if you only need a little bit I gernally get the electrical silicon grease from jaycar.

anti scuff paste is contextual, theres a few types

It was recommend that I use silicone grease on the rear journal before I put on the seal ... And the ant scuff paste on the cam follower rollers incase the engine sits for awhile before starting ..

    gotcha.

antiscuff paste in this application is a very thick kind of assembly lube, you can use almost anything that is compatible with the first oil you are going to use, I would normally use a high tack moly grease

if the silicone grease is for the journal side any quality spray silicone will do nicely but you want something that wont dry easily and go tacky quickly

if its for the crank side, nix that use a smear of grease on the crank and I mean a smear, you dont want it to build up into the seal and prevent the glue from setting that holds the seal together.
