    11" front drums

Hi guys, so I managed to finish making all new brake lines for my 66 88" 2a, after I bought the car (with eligibly all new brakes fitted) I discovered the front drums were missing... Pain in the backside and the guy I bought it off had no idea where they had gone.
Long story short I got some spare 10" drums and went through fit them today but discovered that the fronts had been changed to 11"

So my question isis, is it worth while trying to find some used 11 drums to fit (new ones are twice the price of 10") or should I use what parts I have to take it back to a 10" set up?
I have read that the bigger fronts can cause unexpected lock up in wet conditions on a swb

And if anyone has some spare 11" drums, I'll gladly take them off your hands haha

Ten inch can be unpredictable when they are wet so I don't think the problem is just associated with eleven inch brakes, although as they assumedly have better stopping power it may accentuate the problem.
If all you need is drums I would be sticking with the eleven inch conversion.
You can always change them back to standard ten inch down the track if you find them unsatisfactory.
The eleven inch conversion is/was popular with short wheel base Land Rovers repowered with larger engines.

Careful when sourcing drums - they come in two widths and two different wheel stud sizes check to see which you have. (Since it is a conversion, it could be off any Series Landrover!)

The narrower drums were fitted to all Series 2, 2a 109, and Series 3* 109 and 110/Defender*. The wider drums were fitted to Series 2a & 3 109 six and V8 front. Also fitted to all Series 3 109 in late production.

The applications marked * are the same as Series 2a except that these vehicles had larger diameter (16mm vs 7/16") studs (as did the last of Series 2a).

The Series 3 drums can be fitted to the narrower studs if you have made collars to fill the annulus left round the studs. The studs take the braking force - don't rely on the small countersunk screws.

    Backing plates

    Hello from Brisbane.

Following John's advice re the two different widths of linings on 11" brakes be also aware that the backing plates are also different between the two types. The plate on the wider lining type (3") is offset inwards to keep them centred on the wider drum.

So, I would be trying to identify what is fitted to your truck already before getting too advanced in sourcing drums.

I know your front drums are missing, but in case you can't recognise the difference without a tape measure, the 11" x 3" drum has a 'square' shoulder which is different to the 11" rear drum on any 109" or the identical narrower 11" front drum off a 4 cylinder 109"which has a rounded shoulder.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I have just decided to change out for the original 10". the 11" appear to be wider than the 10" drums that I have by a long way, the hubs i have also changed to the original ones with the 10" so should not have a problem.

Thanks all for your help. This means I can take my time when building the next one to source the proper brakes!
