    1972 Grill

what was the original finish on a '72 2a grill?
    This is mine now...

I also need a couple of captive fittings for the top, what do they look like?

Dave, I may be wrong but I think painted silver finish would be about correct. Someone who knows will correct me I'm sure.

The top fitting to hold it on is the Land Rover badge, from series one it was their way of making it easy to hold on or take off the grille and saved a bracket and a couple of screws on each car made!

So Bang on a badge and she'll be ace!

That is the right badge, although it is likely that it originally had "Rover Australia" instead of "Birmingham England", but there were a variety of these fitted at various times and they are all interchangeable (mine has one of each of these at front and back!).

They are retained by spring steel "nuts" that are expanded by the self tapper thto be retained in the big hole.

This vintage grille was originally chrome plated.

Here is my 1971 2A. The previous (original) owner has made up a couple of stainless steel spacers about five mil wide to go between the grill and the radiator support panel so that the grill would not vibrate against the panel.

The 1971 2A and three series 3's I have only have "Land Rover" written on the emblem. Another series 3 has Rover Australia Pty Ltd across the bottom of the emblem.

    Hello from Java.

Not sure about the 1971 2A as typically it would had the Rover Australia badge fitted front and rear when new - ours did anyway.

The 'Land-Rover' only badge was generally fitted to the rear tub of the Series 3 trucks and a similar badge, possibly plastic, fitted to the County vehicles. The S3 vehicles had the plastic grill which has the Land-Rover name badge moulded into it. So, they only came new with the one traditional aluminium badge. That's how my present S3 is configured - 1975 model.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I cannot see the pic in post 1 however I have a banged up Rover Australia badge hanging in my garage that might be suitable for you.

The vehicles I have are all 88's bar one of the series 3's which is a 109 two door hardtop and they and all have alloy badges.

The 1971 2A I have is a one owner vehicle, so I expect that it is as it came off the showroom floor.
The others being series 3's have the plastic front grill.

    Cheers, Mick.
