Smile Generator to Alternator Conversion Help

    Hi

I have my 1967 6cyl Negative Earth series 2a that I want to convert to an alternator. I don't drive it as much as I would like too, and as a result the battery is loosing charge . The previous owner handily fitted an aftermarket voltmeter to monitor this.

Ive read on a couple threads that the conversion can be done using a series 3 brackets and alternator, with 'trivial wiring'. Would people be kind enough to explain in detail what modification is required.

If people could also recommend the best alternator to fit, Im NOT running any addition lighting or accessories on the vehicle currently.

    Thanks
    Finn

I am away from home, so i don't have any references here. Basically all that is needed is to get the alternator mounting bracket from a Series 3 six and the alternator off the six as well, or a similar one. The voltage regulator can remain in place, but disconnect the field wire from it, also disconnected at the alternator end. The output lead for hte generator can be connected to the main terminal of the alternator and at the regulator end connect it to the lead attached to the battery (it can remain connected to the regulator or not). The indicator lead from the regulator needs a new wire to the alternator indicator terminal.

Any reason you cant disconnect the battery when not using the vehicle? Thats what i do and its prob the reason my battery is still great at almost 8 yrs old. N70zz bought in Feb 09.

I always disconnect after each trip - I've heard several stories where they spontaneously combust.

That would be an option, but I just want to be able to jump in and drive as quick as possible.

My s3 has an isolating switch fitted by the PO. Its fitted in a position so it is readily accessable but still hidden. I just turn it on when i get in and then start up and go. Easy as.

The other thing you can do if you are only concerned abour keeping the battery charged, is to use one of the small solar panels sold for the purpose. I have used one of these for years on my tractor.

    G'day Finn,

If you fit the OE Lucas alternator which has an internal regulator fitted there is a current drain with the ignition off.
The drain is approximately 30ma which is coming from this internal regulator.

I always disconnect the earth lead at the negative battery terminal via a wingnut terminal when the vehicle is not being used regularly. Also makes it easy to disconnect the battery when working on the electrics.

Also when the bonnet is up check Oil and Water levels if not used regularly on older vehicles to avoid disappointment!!.

    Chris
