I think you will find that they will need to be the correct Ohms to suit the Temperature gauge you are mating them too!
Cheers, Mick.
I have a couple of temp senders in the shed. I think they may be from my old ford resto a few years ago.
My questions is what is the difference between diff brand temp senders. If they are the same size, same appearance and work with older gauges, will they work in the s2a gauge?
Im looking at finding a brass adaptor so that I can use one of the temp senders in the shed as a replacement for the 200tdi sender, which won't work with the older gauges.
Is this a workable plan?

You could get lucky, but as a general rule they are all different!

whats the usual running temp of the coolant? I could set up a dummy circuit and test the sender with the gauge I suppose.

The 200tdi runs with a 88deg thermostat, so a LR green top temp sender is required with an adaptor to fit. Seems like I answered my own question - apologies.

I managed to find a VDO sender that matches the series 3 dash gauge and it reads in the centre (N/normal) of the gauge, when the other temp gauge I have fitted reads between 75-80C.
I have a couple of packets in the shed, but I think it was this one, VDO 320-002, it's 1/8th NPT thread, so you will need to make up an adaptor.
Sender Temperature 320.002 vdo
Below is the VDO sender catalogue.
