Series Gearbox ID
Hi everyone... my first of many more questions I'm sure.
I am restoring an ex military 11A but want to replace the gearbox with a full synchro box. Can anyone tell me what suffix I need to look for? Or anyone got one for sale?

The simple answer is to replace it with a Series 3 box. You will have to replace the clutch as well and the pipe to the slave cylinder as it is on the opposite side. (Which makes for easy identification.) A few very late Series 2a were fitted with a slightly different all synchro box, but even if you find one (unlikely) I do not suggest this as parts could be a problem.
The general consensus is that the all synchro Series 3 boxes are weaker than the late 2a boxes, and give more trouble, but this should not be an issue if it is treated reasonably.

Unless you have a real early IIa, stick with the current box...
if you have a real early one, with small lay shaft rear bearing, go for a later IIa box, or, order a few lay shafts, bearings and gaskets. The box is usually pretty forgiving when things go bang in the night (unlike the III box)
