    Series 3 petrol into a 2a petrol

Hello All. Just wanting to know if a series 3 4cyl petrol motor will bolt into a series 2a that had a 4cyl petrol motor. i would be using the 2a gearbox. I would assume I would need to use the 2a pressure plate but would the clutch plate and spigot be the same between the two ? any info on differences greatly appreciated. Thanks Gaz

I need more info but assuming you are talking 4 cylinder petrol to 4 cylinder petrol . the main difference I can think of is the clutch mechanism, this will probably affect the pressure plate.

If you are talking different engines please advise.

I think all 2.25 petrol/diesel blocks are the same, so should bolt in no probs. The clutch pressure plate is different, later model uses multiple fingers, earlier 2a uses 3 finger type (excuse my naming convention, not up to the technical terms yet). I am planning on putting a 2.25 Diesel Ser3 into mine which had a 2.25 petrol Ser 2a so also interested to know the details.

As stated the engines are interchangeable, although early engines had different radiator hoses.

As suggested, there are possible issues around the clutch. If you are using a 2a gearbox, use the 2a clutch. The standard 2a clutch has three fingers, and uses a pressure plate with coil springs.

It was replaced optionally (and standard later) with a slightly larger one using a diaphragm spring and a lot of fingers, similar, but not identical to the Series 3 clutch (the driven plate is the same as the S3). The difference in the pressure plate for the S2a is that it has a spacer between the fingers and the release collar, held by three flat springs to the frame of the pressure plate.

The bolt holes and spigot in the flywheel are, I believe, the same for both engines.

    I've done it.

As John says its only the 2a clutch that you need to fit to the engine. I used the later design.
Everything else fitted up fine. I've got a S3 radiator so used S3 hoses.

Whilst the engines out - change the gearbox mounts, and tidy up the engine bay and chassis

I did this job a while back now, I had a S3 4cyl 2.25 5 main bearing diesel engine that I swapped out for a S3 4 cyl 2.25 petrol engine into one of my Series 2A 109, it was a basic swap I used the S2A clutch/pressure plate it mated up to my S2A 4cyl gearbox bellhousing, cheers Dennis

ps the long bolts are 3/8"Whitworth x 4" long (100mm for the youngsters LOL) , with the hex head machined, these are loosely screwed in, they make aligning the engine to the bell housing so easy, when aligned just unscrew them and refit the original studs, cheers
