			Water temp sender thread

The 2.25 petrol engine was running when I bought my 88” and I have removed it and stripped it (not the mains or pistons as there was adequate compression) and replaced all the gaskets etc....
I have just put it back into the chassis and want to get it running in the next couple of weeks to check for oil leaks etc.
One of the several things I am replacing is the water temp gauge. The tube has long since been crimped over and the potted metal thread going into the head has broken down.
I am going to replace it with an electric sender - but need advice as to what thread would go into the head.
I did read somewhere on the forum that the plug that goes into it is in fact a sump plug, but I don’t think the tread was mentioned.
 Any help?

For my S1 I just went to a pipe fitting shop with the two samples of thread & they supplied me with the correct adaptor male & female thread . ( they didn't even charge me for the adaptor) They had a plate with all different threads in it to screw the samples in.

Thread is three eighths (of an inch) British Standard Pipe or BSP. Note with BSP, the size name refers to the approximate bore of the pipe, NOT the outside diameter of the threads, which is the critical constant factor and significantly larger. Can't remember exactly what it is. Would need to check.

Note with conversion of many things to metric, British Standard Pipe sizes have not changed but sometimes the descriptions have. eg 3/8 (approx. bore size) may be referred to as 10 mm NB (ie Nominal Bore). Half inch 13 mm NB, Three quarter inch 20 mm NB etc

If sensor for electric temp gauge you get has 3/8 BSP thread , can screw in as is. If smaller, needs an adapter. Note I recently bought a VDO capillary tube temp gauge from an automotive instrument specialist to install in 2286cc Rover petrol motor. Would have to measure the size thread on the capillary tube sender to know exactly what it is. At same time also obtained an adapter to screw it into that is 3/8 BSP on the outside. Only information on package it came in was a VDO part number. It all fitted together, so presumably correct one whatever the size of the sender.

					Thanks Guys
I would have replied earlier but have been to the Bendigo swap for a couple of days. Amazing dearth of Land Rover parts!
I have got there in the end. I had presumed the thread was 3/8 BSP and bought a VDO Adaptor, only to find it was too big. It was only then that I saw a thin homemade adapter threaded in.
Once I had that out - all good.
This is the adapter I got - no size on package but it was 3/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT.
