Running in progresses well, todays moment of panic came courtesy of the speedo cable coming off the back of the speedo and flapping around at speed.
I do though need a front propshaft, I can hear a rattle and sure enough there’s enough play in the spline joint to rattle by hand.
Have to find one asap as the the next project goes in the garage this weekend.

He’s been rego‘d for a while now, we’re doing shakedown runs at the moment around the suburb… only a few bits falling off… nothing serious so far
Running in now for a few days… took Sid up the bypass and he cracked 50mph with ease. I did have to walk back to fetch the breather cap which rattled off half way.
I’m thinking parabolics, Sid was a mining maintenance truck and I’m thinking the springs may have been beefed up.
There are some worries if anyone can help.
There is a clunk when I release the clutch hard, I am wondering if it’s the front prop shaft which has properly gone. (I can shake it side to side). Worse case scenario it’s the release mechanism which means a lot of work.

Given I’m only 50km in after a full rebuild I’m thinking it’s just the initial wear, but would welcome thoughts.
Gearbox itself seems fine, bit clunky into second, but I’ve nothing to compare it too.
Other issue is the speedo cable, do these need to be fully restrained…. ?

Possibly klunky on first to second change because there is no synchro, as your technique improves so will the changes. I try to not rev out too much in first it seems to help
Changing down for me is more problematic it’s about correct revs

Not quite sure what you mean by releasing the clutch "hard", but assuming that you mean suddenly, I suggest that the problem is not the sudden release, but rather the drive train going from overrun to drive (or possibly vice versa) due to engine speed mismatch. This means the sudden taking up of slack somewhere. There are lots of places where there is likely to be free play in the drive train - and most of them are of no concern. Bits that are a concern are bolts either worn or in worn holes or loose in the prop shaft flanges, the large nut on the pinion shaft or on the transfer case output shaft, or badly worn splines on the hub drive flanges. Possible, but very unlikely is loose clutch pressure plate or faulty driven plate.
The front prop shaft (and the rest of the front drive train) is not a possible source of the noise unless you are in four wheel drive.
This sort of symptom is exaggerated if the handbrake is dragging even slightly, as it changes the drive train to overrun as soon as you disengage the clutch.

Thanks, that is what I mean. I am confident that the items you mentioned are ok (they have all been rebuilt, etc) I might have stuffed up though somewhere.
I mention the front propshaft only because it is so bad that I can hear it rattle.
I think the handbrake might be it. I’d mentioned from an early run that the over run was strange, it was highly noticeable that as soon as I’ve lift off the accelerator. And when accelerating again, there was a definite change back to drive. I’d put it down to everything being new and tight.
Will check today. I’ve just ordered new prop shafts to clear up the rest of the likely causes.
It doesn't hurt to get rid of play anywhere you find it. It does tend to multiply.Quote:

With Sid about done, the next project arrived today and strip down has started.
I’ve swept up vehicles with less rust but as this is my wife’s van I shall keep such comments to myself.
I’ll start a thread in the other vehicle section if anyone is interested. This is a true challenge, 1959 truck, not moved in 30+ years. And parts are rare as hens teeth.
