Thread: Gearbox crossmember replacement

Yep, the modified removable crossmember someone had done to the Series 3 was woeful so just made a new one up. Used 100x50x3 box section, angled at each side which comes up to a plate that has bolt holes in it to line up with the new plates welded to the chassis. Easy fab if you’re handy with a grinder and welder. No plans or jigs or anything, just made it up as I went along until it all fitted. 👍

Unless you are replacing a damaged cross member, making a removable one up just for the sake of it may not be worth it.
Removable gearbox cross members were fabricated for most/all military series Land Rovers, and some in civilian use were
converted as well, by innovative owners, but i don't know if there is a big advantage when it comes to gearbox removal.
Possibly if you have a hoist it is of benefit, and saves removing the seat-box, but the floor and tunnel needs removing
anyway to access the upper bell housing bolts.
One of my vehicles has a modified cross member, but i have never removed it whenever i have had cause to take the
gearbox out, or replace the clutch, etc.
