Thread: Starter solenoid buzzing

Have you had a meter on the Cct, Battery, while it s buzzing?



This reminds me, Poo Bear in one of his stories also heard a Buzzing sound ("Poo hears a Buzzing Sound" was the title)


Turned out it was a heap of Buzzing Bees. Job done. Any one have a Beehive near you?



I reckon you are getting close to a visit to your Friendly Auto Sparky.

..... Beginning to suspect the starter motor is drawing too much current, and old battery may have been ok.

Today I put the new battery back in after removing it from the Landy before leaving it unattended at the service station, and using the manual push for the solenoid plunger it starts !! So drove home and all good.

So I guess as some of you were suggesting the original battery wasn't so good, but I am guessing that the new battery from Autobarn was also not fully charged.

I am liking this Ingram starter solenoid with the manual push to start :-)

Yes I guess he wouldn't have seen that very often. Well you don't do you?

It seems my starting woes are not over, today with the my new battery the Landy started fine, went to town (5 miles away), started again after shopping, got home ok and unloaded the shopping. Then went to start it again and back to a buzzing solenoid !!!.

I tried the manual push button on the solenoid, and no starting. I checked that I was getting 12V on the starter side of the solenoid.

I am beginning to suspect the starter motor itself.

I'll try to find time tomorrow to take it out and bench test it.

In the meantime, any wisdom from the group ?

My humble opinion is that you won't reach a conclusion until you do. Only so much can be achieved on line.

If you've checked the cabling, changed the battery and know that the solenoid is new I'd be taking the starter motor off before spending money on an Auto Elec. Once off check for play in the bushes and try connecting it to a battery with jump leads (careful it turns quite violently)

The starter could be 'poling', this is where the bush is worn and the rotor touches the stator and stops turning or turns slowly and draws a large current. Not sure if this would cause the buzzing you hear.

Worth checking the bearings are lubricated and the throwout turns freely (don't oil, use graphite powder). If it's oily then degrease it and once dry apply graphite powder.

Are you 100% sure the buzzing is from the solenoid ?
