That Chassis Number doesn't look like any Land Rover Chassis Number that I have ever seen before...

Perhaps an owner added it, when trying to get it registered?

That is not a Landrover chassis number. I suspect it is a number issued by a state or territory. I have come across ones issued by NSW, which start with "N", and end with "P", and Victoria, which start with "V" and end with "P". These are(or were) issued for vehicles where no chassis number could be found on the chassis itself.

No doubt the number is a mystery as to why and how it has come to be, however at the end of the day i doubt you will have any trouble getting it registered, after all, the Authorities just need a number recorded with the vehicle details.
As John says, it probably been issued by one of the state authorities because the original didnt exist for some reason or another.
I have a Holden 186 engine here that should have an engine number starting with 186xxxxxxx, however it has a number and the letters VP.
My research tells me this number was issued by Victoria Police back in the day.
Following your progress with interest, so please keep up the posts.

    Cheers, Mick.

given that it has a gal chassis, perhaps it was a donor from another vehicle so they ground off the old number and gave it a new one? As others said, as long as that number is on the system somewhere (and not on the wrong type of list!) you wont have a drama. Are the bulkhead plates with the original vehicle number still there?

    Cheers,

    Adam

    Sorry, I missed your post.
What do you mean (and not on the wrong type of list!) ?
Answer to your query. Notice different letter at the end of number.
