    Pippa the 1959 Series II SWB

    So one week ago I became the custodian of this 1959 Series II CKD. She is CKD number 10 for 1959.

    The plan is for a ground up rebuild and week one's strip down has gone pretty smoothly. Not many surprises so far. Rear crossmember will need replacing so to will the gearbox crossmember, the dumb irons (possibly will repair these) and the engine crossmember. I guess I better buy a welder and start practicing as I have never welded anything in my life............... so now seems like an appropriate time to learn

    So next steps are to buy a mig welder and a decent size air compressor.

    I am looking forward to input along the way and will post updates as often as I can

    Nice looking project you have taken on, however that concrete floor will never look the same again.

    nice project.

    It's not just the floor that changes, the garage itself becomes jam packed with all the tools and bits you need.

    A big compressor is a great bit of kit to have (I got a huge 3 phase beast) for some jobs it's invaluable (rattle gun, painting, riveting, descaling, air hacksaw) but for others such as sanding, grinding, etc, you just can't buy a big enough compressor to compete with electric tools.

    Thanks guys..........so you think that I am fighting a loosing battle trying to keep a tray under anywhere that I am working to protect the concrete I know I am but nothing a coat of epoxy won't fix if and when we ever want to sell. Also, I didn't have much room in the garage to start with so space is definitely going to become an interesting factor, not to mention the driveway slopes up to the garage.............rolling it out won't be a problem it will just be putting it back.

    Cadas, As much as I would love a 3 phase compressor, and envy you having one, 15amp is going to have to be my limit so will have to see how I go.

    On a side note I just made some homebrew penetrating oil. 50/50 transmission fluid and acetone. Gee I wish I had have mixed some up a week ago. Had to spend an extra hour in the garage tonight as it was working so well

    Best to paint the floor before you get it dirty then you can wash it out.

    Try using flattened card board boxes as to absorb oil drips and spillage.

    G'day All,
    A word of WARNING if you paint the garage floor!.

    Car ramps, ladders will slide on it. I found out the hard way when using ramps. When you try to drive up on them, the ramps are launched forward at speed. Also when driving down they slide out forward as well.

    VERY DANGEROUS with painted concrete floors.

    I have to use 80 grit sand paper under the ramp feet to keep them from sliding and make sure the area is clear of people and pets.

    Thanks for the advice regarding painted garage floors. To be honest apart from show rooms and reselling a property I am not a great fan anyway. They look good.......but then again you have seen my garage :-)

    G'day Brett,

    Gee you have a nice tidy garage compared to my old workshop!.

    For my new 60 sq/mtr workshop I had the concrete helicoptered for a smooth finish and creeper glides over it.
    I used "Bondall Garage and Factory floor protector paint" from Bunnings and added 25% Penetrol to make it resistant to brake fluid.

    It is easy to keep clean however, knowing the danger with ramps and ladders etc. I wouldn't paint it in hindsight.
