    Transfer Case question

    Hi everyone,

I have a 1965 ex army workshop model 2A. I've had her registered and running for years and recently I've noticed excessive oil gathering under the transfer case and gear box. I got underneath the inspect it and I noticed that there seems to be a missing filler plug but I can't determine which one this is. I have attached a photo of what I think is a problem.

Does anyone now if this is in fact a missing filler plug? Your feedback is most welcome.

Not sure what that is, on mine (a 63) that’s about where the intermediate shaft should poke out.

Is that a hole drilled in the end of the shaft?

There’s an oil seal behind the handbrake Drum that wears out, and also the gasket between the speedo housing and transfer case, there’s a lot that can leak behind there.

When the seal behind the handbrake drum leaks there is a drain that is meant to drain the oil direct to ground rather than into handbrake drum, but if its blocked the oil will go everywhere.

Yep, that's the end of your intermediate shaft and the retaining tab, stud and nut just above it.

The oil could be coming from..........er, actually, the oil could be coming from lots of places.

Thank you heaps for the information guys. I appreciate it very much.

So it looks like the end of the intermediate shaft is missing (I found a picture of what this looks like - attached below). I can see what you mean about the source of the oil leaks. I've watched a couple of videos on youtube about rebuilding series gearboxes and I can see why the source of the leaks can be any number of reasons as there are many seals that can degrade.

Looks like a job for a gearbox mechanic.

    Thanks again,

    Solon.

    Hi guys,

I spoke to a gearbox mechanic today and sent him the photo. He's has a fair bit of experience on these and he said the hole with the threads is by design to enable the shaft to be removed. Just thought I'd share this with you as well as I keep discovering new things all the time.

Some one can correct me if I am wrong , but I think the shaft would need to be pulled out so the keeper can fit into the slot in the shaft to stop the shaft moving further into the transfer case It could save you bore damage later if the shaft was to go in far enough that it is not supported on booth ends .Inkedshaft_LI1.jpg As is correct me if I am wrong.

It doesn’t look original, someone could have machined an original but the colour looks wrong.

It looks like modern hardened steel (the gold colouring)

Wonder if it’s a shop made item?

You could be correct but I think I would be still checking it , dose not have to be pulled back very far , better to know than be sorry & if the shaft was moving in & out or rotating it could ware the housing .
