    Replacement ignition coil warm/hot

    Hi all,
I'm going through the process of replacing and re-furbishing the ignition and fuel system in an effort to get my 1960 s2 started.

I replaced the old coil (Echlin IC-31) with a new one from British Auto Parts, part number PRC9858.

When connecting the coil, it became quite warm with the ignition on (motor not running). Is this normal? I was worried I had it connected backwards as it has been converted to negative earth, but fairly confident it's correct. Is it normal for an ignition coil to be quite warm?

Polarity is irrelevant for the coil. There are two things that will allow the coil to overheat:-

    1. Coil is 8v, intended for use with a ballast resistor, not used on Series Landrovers (but is used on the Holden engines often installed). Solution - replace with correct coil

    2. Ignition is left on, with the points closed (or a short) for a prolonged period, with the engine stopped. Should not allow the coil to get hot enough to damage it, but is likely to damage the points.

Note that "Sports", or "High Performance" coils can get quite warm in normal use, but have no real advantage on a Series engine, and may be less reliable.

Thanks - I think your 2nd suggestion might have been the issue. I disconnected the coil again, turned the motor over with the hand crank and reattached the coil. Seems to have sorted the issue. Appreciate your response
