Rear main split seal not fitting correctly?

I was replacing rear main seal on my 1961 2.25 and when I was sliding the bearing cap down it was getting caught on the seal. This is a series 2 engine (151xxxxxx) so is there a different seal needed? It looks like the crankshaft is sitting to far back on the block.

Nope, parts manual only lists the one split seal. Maybe a dumb question, but: are you following the workshop manual? That seal has a surprisingly tricky procedure associated (fitting the garter spring separately etc.), and the workshop manual helps a great deal.

Rear main split seal not fitting correctly?

Hi Longboard, I came up against this issue a few months ago when rebuilding my S2 2.25 petrol. What I think it boils down to is that on the S2 engines (151 prefix) a different split seal and set of seal retainers are used. Then, for reasons known only to Land Rover, reference to this early setup was not included in most of the S2/S2a manuals. The retainers on the S2 engine were quite different to the S2a engines I had laying around the shed. The solution is to get seal retainers from a later 2.25 (you can buy these new), and it appears to work with the early engine, and the readily available seal kit p/n 542492. Well it fits properly at least, I haven’t started the engine yet. If you want to stay original, Blanchards have the early seal/retainers for a cool £55 (Buy Oil Seal for Crank, Rr Early 2.1/4. Part 504844). Hope this helps.

    Cheers, Matt
