    Gearbox Output Stiffness

    Hi,

I'm nearing the end of my gearbox overhaul and have run across an issue that I hope the brains trust can help me with.
I've just mounted the rear output flange to the transfer case and put the transmission brake on it, before I torqued the shaft nut down I could quite easily spin the rear shaft but now that I've tightened the nut it takes 2 hands grabbing on the brake housing to make it spin. It is this tight even if I put the transfer box in neutral.
Is it normal to be this tight? It's been so long since I dismantled everything I can't remember how it was before.

    Thanks,
    Rex

Shouldn’t be that tight…. Did you have a tool to hold the flange steady while you torqued the nut?

I made one using a length of flat bar and two bolts

You need it for the diff torque as well

Did you set the output bearing preload as per manual? This is adjusted by the shims behind the speedo drive housing. (Unlikely to be a problem)

Otherwise, is the handbrake drum touching something, or shoes out of centre or too tight? Or is the seal the wrong one, wrong way round, or not seated properly? And most likely, perhaps, did you fail to oil the sealing surface on the output flange and it is grabbing on the seal?

    Hi John and Cadas,

Thanks for the suggestions, turns out it was the oil slinger getting pressed against the oil seal. I seated it a bit further onto the shaft and then everything came together perfectly.

    Cheers,
    Rex
