    Royal Australian Navy Landys?

    Hi,

I'm restoring a 1963 Series IIa 88" (the "1-year" project that's 3-years in much to my wife's enjoyment) & hopefully on the road by end of year.

I've been doing some on & off research trying to find the history on my Landy (see information below) and wanted to run this theory by you all.

Could my Landy have been a Royal Navy vehicle?

From pulling it apart, it was originally bronze green then repainted blue (very early in it's life). The respray was fairy tidy as they did the vast majority of the body inside & out (only hint of green on bulk head gearbox area & behind instrument cluster panel. The wheels were also painted the blue colour too at one stage. See attached some old photos from back in late 2020 of my landy in the junkyard in Quorn SA (showing the blue colour).

I found these bits of info at REMLR Royal Australian Navy Lists - REMLR & R.A.N Series 2 88 -REMLR . My Landy's colour + engine & chassis numbers are around the times in this list where I think it was sold mid/late 1963 or early 1964.

    Summary:

    • Nearest chassis numbers (2430435B and 24304278 were delivered to customers on the 17/01/64 and 24/09/63 respectively
    • Engine number corresponds with the correct age of the vehicle too, the closest being 25148914D delivered in an Series 2a 88" on the 07/11/63.
    • Chassis 24305892B record for Royal Australian Navy, Dept of Supply Navy, Dun bar 17/02/64
    • Chassis 24206193B record for Royal Australian Navy, Dept of Supply Navy, OLY APL 01/06/64

    Some more detailed vehicle information:

    • Rego: SWH150 (South Australian)
    • Chassis: 24304270B
    • Engine: 25148915D (head has markings: 'CBS 525183 X 11', we also found on base of engine the markings '5 10 62' which means it was cast on 5th Oct 1962)
    • Gearbox: 151918808
    • Front Axle: 24118251A
    • Rear Axle: 24128941A
    • Steel 16x5 Wheels date stamped: 25/06/1963, 09/04/1963 & 21/11/1962
    • Axle housings: 17376 & 17377 (Borg Warner)
    • Original Colour: Bronze Green (resprayed blue), Limestone roof & wheels (wheels painted blue then black)

Any suggestions on tracking down the history are most welcome.

See pic below from late 2020 from the junk yard in Quron South Australia where it was bought from.

That colour looks a bit dark to be the Navy Sky Blue colour.

Secondly unlike Army and Airforce vehicles - Navy vehicles were not actually Navy with dedicated Navy number plates like Army and Airforce.

The vehicles used by the Navy were Department of Administrative Services (or whatever they were called at the time) vehicles that were issued for use by the Navy. They carried standard Commonwealth Number Plates starting with Z but the second letter was normally N when used by the Navy.

REMLR is probably the best source of information as I dont believe Dof A records dont seem to exist any longer.

It could well be an Ex-RAN vehicle. There are images on- line showing some being on Board the Stern of RAN vessels & as I understand it were used for shore Transport when RAN ships visited foreign Ports.

You may find more info on REMLR, a sister site to Aulro. which concentrates on LR ex Service Vehicles. There are certain very knowledgeable people who are very conversant with the LR/RAN connection. Goes by the name of Diana & possibly others.
