Engine miss firing
The Series 2 A decided to act up over the weekend, I had recently taken it to Geelong from Gippsland. It had driven very well both ways including 50 mph over the Westgate Bridge. The only issue I did experience was a severe oil leak from the bell housing which turned out to be gearbox oil. I had just replaced the oil with CASTROL 80W GL 4 oil. After some thoughts and discussions with some fellow Land Rover friends it was decided to change the oil to CASTROL 80/90W GL4/5 oil. When I made the return trip the gearbox oil did not leak, so the conclusion was that for some reason the 80W oil was frothing up under driving conditions causing the leak from the input shaft.
Now to the miss firing as stated it was running very well to Geelong and back so when it started missing I was a bit confused. But it is a Land Rover so I shouldn’t be surprised, I started the usual diagnosis, distributor points, coil, spark plugs, timing, valve adjustment. Nothing seemed wrong so off with the carburettor check for water, crud etc also nothing. Finally I removed the plug leads from the distributor cap and what I found amazed me in so much as how it could have operated at all with the corrosion I found
