Thread: what carpet to use ?

I have rubber mats on the floor, easier to clean.
My gearbox tunnel is covered in black foam rubber & held down with contact cement.

I don't think carpet would be the go for me as I like mud, but marine carpet with a backing of foam rubber works well.

I use marine grade stuff and I dont stick it down I cut it to the same shape as the panels and punch holes where the fasteners go throught the panel, add a body washer under the head and then use the panel fastener to hold it in place.

I have used rubber on the floor & gear box tunnel - it make a huge difference - and its easy to clean

I can't comment on how effective the carpet that's in the S3 is at dampening noise, it's just spare/old carpet put to a 2nd use really, but what I can tell you is this: each panel is cut to shape, with a bit of overlap. The piece over the transmission tunnel is sewn to fit around all the panels up to & including the firewall. Nothing's fixed down, under 5 mins sees everything pulled out to clean.

IF I had to tho Id sealastic the hook side of some velcro to the top and sides of the doors (on the inside edge) and then sew the cloth part to the back of the carpet.

not for any fancy reason other than if you use the good marine carpet there you can then pull it off easily and use it as a floor mat for your tent/ heatshield/ground mat if you have to get under the vehicle for some reason. It will also allow you to remove them for inspection and to add more velcro points if the first lot of adhesive points dont hold it in place.
