Mongrel the bitza has found her new home.
It was a battle getting her off the trailer to in front of the shed by myself but I got her there.
Like a true mongrel she is a bit of everything:
Motor is a diesel - 7th month 1980.
Gearbox is a series 3 - No 90434180B.
Colour - was yellow then dark blue then light blue.
Front diff - looks to have been strengthened (dont realy know).
Rear diff - Salisbury (spelt wrong I think).
Wheels - Have the same studs as my Disco, nuts screw on no problem.
The drivers side front door is the only real problem, the others are good.
The Bulkhead needs attention, may look for a donor vehicle.
She was never fitted with seatbelts so I will need to organise those.
Chassis number is still a mystery, still looking for it, short of grinding off the galvo I can't find it.
Now for a stupid question - how do you work the glow plugs?
Here are a few pics, I will post more with my progress (also more stupid questions to come)

howdy guys , Thats a 2a front diff . All series 2a had the strengthened diff housings series 3 did not ..... i hope. great wagon . bring on the pics when workin on it

G'day All, You have spelt Salisbury correctly, and just to give you some info on the front differential housing, the diff/strengthening kit to the lhs was a optional extra for civvie vehicles and was a standard fitment for the Series 2A military. The Series 2 Comm/recon cars were not initially fitted with same but could have been retrofitted as needed, I can't honestly say whether the Series 3 had them or not.
The glow system is relativley simple, I think it's a brown wire from the back of the Ign/sw to the resistor, from the other side of the resistor to the glow plugs x 4 to earth, mind you if any one of the glow plugs is buggered (i.e. Filament burnt off/broken) it breaks the circuit, so if this happens in No4 which is first to recieve current thats it no more current to other plugs, you should be able to check it with a test light anyway cheers Dennis
PS Is the engine a 3 or 5 main bearing engine, I just can't remember the engine suffix for the 5 main bearing, I should cause I have one LOL.

I am a bit excited about Mongrel, my wife and kids can't quite work out why I didn't just go and buy a late model 4x4 with all the luxuries. I am sure they will work it out when we try to copy the Leyland Brothers.
Thanks for all your good wishes, Dinty I guess you just turn the ignition on and the plugs heat up? I have driven heaps of diesels but nothing this old. The older ones usualy just turn the ignition around and hold for the light.

Hi Dinty how do I tell if the engine is a 3 or 5 main bearing engine.
I am guessing its a 2.25 but my Landy knowledge is very light on (growing slowly though).

First key click to glow then you will get the dash light. Only needs 10 - 20 seconds. I used to get the key in before i got in, then fannying round with seatbelt etc. it was ready to kick over.
G'day All, If you have a standard ign/switch, the positions are 1st turn R is ON, next hold for glow, next position will/should start the engine.
The 5 main bearing engine has webs cast onto the sides of the block down along the base where the sump attaches, if your block is plain cast it will be a 3 main bearing block, the engine suffix for my 5 main bearing engine is A, which surpised me anyway hope she starts for you cheers Dennis
Series 3 does not have the diff strengthening kit
She looks pretty good. A bit of a bitza, btu that makes it all the more fun. Somebodys boat launcher??
