I've got a SeriesII LWB ute that I've been building up as a play toy. It's come with a 16gallon fuel tank under the driver which I want to remove before it gets smashed and put sliders under the doors. I've been looking through the cat from Four Wheel Drives and there is a Station Wagon tank which looks like it sits between the chassis rails and has a cross member pass through the top of it.
Can anybody tell me:
If this will fit into the back of a Series II ute?
Where in the back does it mount and if possible how low?
What capacity does it hold?

It mounts between the chassis rails at the very back, the filler is sited in the body behind the driver's side rear wheel. I think it holds 12 gallons, or about 55L. The gauge unit is different to either the 10 or 16 gallon underseat tanks, and won't come with the new tank.
The army used underseat tanks from Series 1 to 3 with no major problems. Does your 16gal tank leak?

Actually, do you know if the County ones also were suitable?
My 16gal... I've just had a look (and then got side tracked spraying the garden and measuring suspension/tyres) and it leaks/weeps ever so slightly. Maybe a drop a every one or two days. Is this typical?

There were two types of rear tanks and they were mainly fitted to the 109 wagons. The standard tank was 16 gal and there was also a 10 gal tank which sat to one side and allowed the driveshaft for a rear PTO to pass. The 10 gal tanks were also standard on UK built 109's from mid Series 2a.
The filler on both the station wagons and the utes were the same as on the county 110 wagons.
They have a lot of clearance but still get damaged at the very rear.

Hi Diana, thanks very much for this! I'll have to keep my eye out. It sounds like the bigger tank will be the go, although I'll have to reroute my exhaust which runs straight down through the PTO port. Not a big issue in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather reroute it and gain the extra capacity and range from the large tank.
Is that an additional Xmember which is in front of the tank?

No the top/front of the tank has an angle iron which mounts to 2 brackets on the chassis with rubber shock mounts.Originally Posted by Slunnie
Not that I would suggest removing strength from the rear of the chassis, but I would assume that you could also fit a long range tank from a Defender or County, should the penultimate cross member be missing.

Ahhh, thanks for this Diana. I was wondering what the diff between the tanks were. That sounds good though and it looks like this will be tank to use in the Landy for a number of reasons. Just got to find one now, though I'm assuming that they'll be around.
