    Starter motor

    My starter (Lucas) is not working under load. Need new bushes?? Does anyone know of where to get them, and the other alternative is a replacement starter. Is there a new one or an alternative for it?

    About the only thing that goes wrong with these (apart from the inertia engagement) is the brushes/commutator or the bushes wearing and allowing it to pole. Both are likely to be easy and cheap to repair. An auto electrician, preferably a long established one, is the place to look for parts. Four Wheel Drives list the brushes but not the bushes, and any of the non-dealer Landrover specialists is also a likely source of the parts.

    When I replaced the end bush in one of my starters, I had to reem it to suit. CBC did not have a perfect size bush.

    Bren, I've just overhauled the starter on my Series 2 because it stopped working. The rear bush was badly worn and allowed it to pole (armature touches the field coils).
    Take it apart and check the bushes, commutator, inertia drive and brushes. Brushes are available from 4 Wheel Drives as mentioned by JDNSW, but be careful because for some reason a 'set' of starter brushes from them comprises just 2 (yet 4 are needed ?!). Commutator can be machined by someone with access to a lathe, you will need a hefty soldering iron to remove & replace the brushes and the inertia drive should be degreased & lubricated with graphite powder or a similar dry lubricant.

    The rear bush is 3/4" OD, 5/8" ID and 3/4" long but as detailed by Aaron you may have to ream it to fit the shaft. I couldn't get an oilite bush so fitted a phosphor bronze one, this will have to be replaced in the future because it needs a good supply of lubricant (which you certainly don't get on a starter motor). I replaced two brushes because they had been damaged by a previous owner, brush was OK but connecting lead damaged.

    4 Wheel Drives list a pattern starter at about $290, a local auto elec shop quoted me that much to rewind the armature ! If you don't want to tackle repairing it then look for a secondhand one.

    I would suggest that you contact KB Classis Spare at Witta in Qld(07)54 944 221 as Kevin Baker has a large stock of new Lucas spare parts and I have purchased Starter Motor repair Kits from him before, you need to give him the model of starter and the serial number that is stamped on the casing then you can repair it yourself or that it and the repair kit to an Auto Electrician to strip and recondition Barry Cliff in Wyong NSW also has Lucas parts (02)4351 1968. Hope that is of some help
